Staying safe this festive season – an update on Omicron from the local Public Health team Omni The COVID-19 Omicron variant is now spreading rapidly in the UK, and scientists are predicting that a large increase in hospitalisations is likely by January. Real world data from the UK shows that the booster jab is 70 to 75% effective against Omicron, so please encourage all those over 18 in your clubs to get their booster as soon as possible. Free taxi rides to local COVID-19 vaccination centres are available via www.bedford.gov.uk/vaxicab. In response to the Omicron emergency the Government has implemented it’s Plan B. Face coverings are mandatory in most indoor public spaces, the NHS COVID Pass is required to get into nightclubs and other large crowded venues (proof of 2 vaccine doses or a negative lateral flow test), and people are being encouraged to work from home if they can. Contacts of positive cases who are fully vaccinated or are between the ages of 5 and 18½ do not need to self-isolate, but are strongly encouraged to take a daily lateral flow test for 7 days. You will no doubt be reviewing your sports and social activities in light of the Omicron emergency and the Plan B rules. Please continue to undertake thorough risk assessments of all activities, and if you choose to go ahead with them, please do everything you can to minimise the risks to your staff, participants and spectators. This may include the use of outdoor space when practical, avoiding mixing groups indoors and on transport, adequate ventilation, the use of face coverings, hand hygiene and additional LFD testing before activities. The physical, mental and social benefits of sporting activities remain as vital as ever. Thanks for everything you are doing to keep our sports clubs safe during these uncertain times. We expect the national guidance for sports providers to be updated soon to reflect Plan B, but for further advice and support please contact public.health@bedford.gov.uk.
