Archipelago: Take Part Queen’s Park Community Exhibition

This exhibition is a celebration of the vibrancy of Bedford’s Queen’s Park using film, embroidery and clay, curated by artist Caroline Wendling in collaboration with residents as part of the Take Part Queen’s Park project.

Take Part Queen’s Park is an art project both inspired by and created with the community of Queen’s Park in Bedford. Through engaging residents of all ages with the creative arts the project seeks to celebrate residents’ sense of place and community, and share that with the wider residents of Bedford.

Refugee Week Returns to The Higgins

Refugee Week (20-26 June) is a nationwide initiative that celebrates the contributions, creativity and resilience of refugees, migrants and people seeking sanctuary to the UK and encourages better understanding between communities. This year we have in-person activities and online content to celebrate.

The Higgins Knitting and Crochet Group

Tuesday 21 June, 11am – 1pm

Body & Soul Study Day

As part of the Body & Soul exhibition, the Study Day includes a fascinating talk by Dr Charlotte Grant, Senior Lecturer in English at NCH and granddaughter of the artist Martin Bloch. Dr Grant will share stories of the pioneering women in the Bloch family who escaped persecution in Nazi Germany, including her grandmother Charlotte whose portrait is on display in the exhibition. See the full programme of the day with talks and a guided tour.

New Morris Dancing Events

40 Years of Morris: Memories & Reflections

Saturday 9 July, 11am – 12:30pm

Morris dancing is often viewed as a fixed and unchanging English tradition. Yet the past forty or so years has seen significant changes, particularly through the development of women’s Morris teams and a willingness to move away from the collected dances.

Led by Lydia Saul, Keeper of Social History, and Chas Leslie, curator of the Innovation and Tradition: 40 years of Morris display, hear from ex-members of Redbornstoke Morris and Bedfordshire Lace Morris in a panel discussion as they share memories of these changes and reflections of their experiences, followed by an audience Q & A.

Morris Dance – Children’s Workshop

Saturday 9 July, 2pm – 3:30pm

Free Entry – Booking Essential

Join members of Golden Hare Morris and learn some basic steps and put together a simple Morris dance. Afterwards, show off your Morris moves in a short performance for your families. This workshop is suitable for children aged 8-12 years old and children must be accompanied by an adult.
