SEND matters, News and updates from Bedford Borough Schools and Children's Services.

Welcome to July SEND Matters

Summer of SEND 2-23

WELCOME from Chris Morris, Chief Officer for Education, SEND and School Infrastructure

Hello and welcome to this bumper edition of SEND Matters!

We are now over one month into our 3rd ever Summer of SEND and we have already achieved so much; from the amazing Health Focus Week, to the SEND section at the Kite Festival and the first ever SEND family sailing events, but having read this edition it does feel as though we are only just getting started!

Whilst there is always more that we can be doing, we have so much to be proud of within our SEND community here in Bedford Borough, and we have lots to be looking forward to over the next few months. In this edition you will find information on the summer holiday activities that we have commissioned for children and young people with SEND as well as their siblings and families. This year we are delighted with the range of services and support available to young people aged 14+, plus our exciting new range of sports and clubs.

This edition is also full of helpful information about free activities you can do across the school holidays, and look out for an exciting update on our sensory garden and how you can get involved.

Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank all of you for all that you are doing to support our wonderful children and young people with SEND. I loved meeting so many of you across the two days of the Kite Festival and I hope to see many of you at various events across the summer. I hope that this summer you all manage to find some time to relax and recharge across the summer with lots of memories created!

Bedford Borough Council Short Breaks Statement 2023/2024

Community Short Breaks

Bedford Borough Council has a duty to ensure that there are a range of short breaks available to meet the needs of children and young people with disabilities living in Bedford Borough.  In 2022, Bedford Borough Council and Bedford Borough Parent Carer Forum asked local parent carers, children, and young people about their experiences of community short breaks.

As a result of the consultation the Local Authority went through the tender process and have commissioned three organisations to provide community shorts breaks:-

Autism Beds, BDCPS and SSG.
