Cases in Bedford Borough continue to rise with the case rate per 100,000 residents more than doubling in just two weeks. Infections are mostly among people aged under 40, with the highest increase among younger males. Please continue to:
- take a free test if you have symptoms and get the vaccine if you are 18 or over.
- self-isolate if told to do so by NHS Test and Trace.
- if you can, wear a face covering indoors, in busy places and on public transport and, where possible, keep your distance from people that you don’t live with.
- try to meet outdoors rather than indoors, and test twice a week with a rapid lateral flow test to keep your friends and family safe.
Drop-ins for COVID-19 vaccinations are available for everyone aged 18 or over in Bedford Borough, with no appointment necessary, at Bedford Heights, Manton Lane and at some pharmacies. Second doses are available from eight weeks so make sure you get that crucial second dose to give you the best possible level of protection.

Following approval at Full Council on Wednesday 14 July, Laura Church (pictured left) is set to become the new permanent Chief Executive at Bedford Borough Council and will take on the new role later this year.
Laura has been at Luton Borough Council since 1988, working initially in planning and since taking on roles such as the Head of Regeneration and Service Director for Business and Consumer Services.
She then led the Council’s work on Place and Infrastructure as the Corporate Director, before becoming Deputy Chief Executive and Corporate Director for Population Wellbeing, with responsibility for adult social care, public health and housing.
Mayor Dave Hodgson said, “I am delighted that Laura will be joining Bedford Borough Council later this year and I look forward to working with her. She brings a wealth of knowledge, experience and leadership that I know we will all benefit from.”
Laura said, “I am very much looking forward to joining Bedford Borough Council as the new Chief Executive. After all my time working just down the A6, I am excited to make this move and bring my experience to deliver my best for the Borough.”

The Higgins Bedford has received a nomination for the category of Best Art Gallery in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire in the Muddy Awards 2021.
The awards, hosted by the Muddy Stilettos lifestyle website, celebrate the very best of local businesses and venues, emphasising quality and creativity.

This is the very first time that The Higgins Bedford has been nominated for a Muddy Award, and is the only art gallery in Bedford to have reached the final stage of the awards.
The Higgins Bedford are excited that they have been recognised for the work of staff and volunteers after a difficult year. As a result of national restrictions, The Higgins Bedford has had to close several times, but still remained active online, providing the community with online events and content to enjoy. Staff and volunteers have also been busy behind the scenes preparing for new exhibitions, which are now open to the public; ‘Going to Town – 200 Years of Bedford’s Art’ and ‘Airship Dreams: Escaping Gravity’.

The Higgins Bedford have joined in with the Summer of SEND to deliver a number of free and fun online activities for children and young people with disabilities and/or special educational needs, which will run from 26 July – 23 August.
Children and young people are invited to take part in a series of pre-recorded video workshops filled with movement, music and games themed around transport. Workshops include going on a sensory adventure to discover hidden treasure, getting crafty to make hot air balloons, dancing like aeroplanes and bikes, and much more.
To round off the summer holidays, Bedford Borough Council are working with Spectrum Community Arts to hold a Zoom celebration that will be a fun, accessible adventure for all to enjoy. There will be dance, drama, music and games, with plenty of transport-themed fun. Places for this free virtual performing arts workshop are limited and can be booked via our website.
These workshops are part of Bedford Borough Council’s Summer of SEND, a celebration of all things Special Educational Needs and/or Disability (SEND) across Bedford.
