Temporary suspension of green waste collections following fire at Elstow Waste Transfer Station
We have an important update for you following the fire at the Elstow Transfer Station over the weekend. Thanks to the swift response from our emergency services, everyone is safe – but the station is currently out of action. For updates regarding the fire, road closure and advice for local residents please follow Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service.
What does this mean for you?
To keep your recycling and other household waste moving, we’ve had to put our contingency plans into action. This means, for the next two weeks, we’re pausing green waste collections from the kerbside across the borough. We know this isn’t ideal, especially for all our green-fingered residents (we see you, and your beautiful gardens!), but it’s necessary while we transport priority waste to another licensed site.
What can you do in the meantime?
If you have extra green waste, you can still take it to the Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) on Barkers Lane.
If you’re unable to do this, don’t worry – collections will be back as soon as possible.
We understand this is a disruption, and we’re truly sorry for any inconvenience. Our teams are working hard behind the scenes to keep things running as smoothly as is possible.
Thank you for your patience and understanding.
If you’ve got any creative composting tips, or want to share how you’re making the most of your garden while you wait, drop them in the comments below – let’s help each other out!
We’ll keep you updated as the situation develops and we receive further information.
