COVID-19 Pfizer Drop-Ins in Bedford Town Centre

This Saturday, 26 June, anyone 18 and over in Bedford Borough can drop-in to the Harpur Suite, Bedford for their Pfizer vaccination, without the need to book an appointment or show ID.

Between 11am – 4pm at the Harpur Suite (next to Bedford Central Library) anyone 18 and over can drop-in and get their Pfizer vaccine. Clinicians and other health professionals will be on hand to help answer any questions residents may have about vaccinations.

Saturday’s drop-ins for COVID-19 Pfizer vaccinations are in addition to the other drop-ins at vaccination clinics in Bedford Borough, at Kings House (Pfizer) and Bedford Heights (both Pfizer and AstraZeneca).

All drop-ins will offer both the first and second vaccines. Second doses can now be given eight weeks, at the earliest, after the first dose (rather than 12 weeks). You must get the same vaccine for both of your doses.

Cllr Louise Jackson, Portfolio Holder for Health and Wellbeing said, “We know that COVID-19 vaccination will allow us get back to doing the things we love, so we want to help everyone 18 and over in Bedford Borough to get their vaccine.

“Residents can still book via the NHS website but we understand many people will have commitments they need to work around such as work and childcare. Drop-in sessions make it easy to get vaccinated close to where you live, work or even while you are shopping.”

Extract of this week's COVID-19 Snapshot

This week’s snapshot shows 173 cases of COVID-19 locally in the 7 days to 20 June.

The full snapshot also shows that our case rate per 100,000 of the population has dropped just below 100, at 99.8.

Please- continue to play your part and keep being careful so we can all keep the numbers going in the right direction and slow the spread of COVID-19 in our communities.

Everyone in the Borough is still encouraged to take up the offer of twice weekly testing so that we can stop the spread of the virus.

People without symptoms can drop in to the rapid test centre at the Faraday Community Centre, off Elstow Road, Bedford. No appointment is needed and results come back in less than an hour. Home test kits can also be collected from the test centres, some pharmacies and libraries or ordered online via our website.

Anyone with symptoms of COVID-19 must self-isolate and book a test via the Government website, visit the NHS COVID-19 app or call 119.

Staying Safe Around Water

With the Summer here, we have some advice to keep you safe around water. The key to staying safe is making the right choices to avoid getting into difficulty in the first place.

We advise against swimming in open water as it’s hard to judge the depth of a river or lake just by looking, and there could be submerged dangers such as weeds or rubbish. Also avoid going into water near locks, weirs, sluices, bridges and pipes as these structures are often linked with strong currents.

If you see someone in trouble in the water, call 999 immediately. Use a lifebelt, tree branch or some kind of implement to help them – going into the water risks your life too. The water in rivers and lakes can be colder than you expect, and cold water shock will affect your ability to swim, look after yourself, or rescue others.

If you’re going to a swimming pool, check the safety arrangements in advance; does the pool have a lifeguard? Tell your children never to swim alone, and actively supervise all young children near water even if they have an older sibling who is a strong swimmer.

If possible, encourage children to take swimming lessons to help them gain water confidence and learn essential water safety skills.
