June is our month of community where we celebrate all the things that make our communities great.

Great Big Green Week runs from 8-16 June and in this newsletter we feature some of the many events that are taking place.


Every Tuesday

Community food growing project at Bunyan Sports Centre

mile road community food growingWant to learn new skills, meet new people and grow your own food? Then why not join the community food growing project?

All tools and instruction will be provided and no previous experience is required to take part. Sessions take place every Tuesday from 10.45am-1.30pm.

Please wear suitable outdoor clothing, sturdy enclosed footwear and bring your own gardening gloves if you have some.

Meet at 10.45am in front of the Bunyan Sports Centre on Mile Road, Bedford.

Wednesday 12 June

Home upgrade grant and heat pump showcase

Harpur Suite , 12 noon- 2pm

Does your household live in an off-gas property, and struggle with energy bills?

You might be missing out on a vital government grant. Please come along to listen and ask questions about the support available.

We will be joined by Agility Eco, Bedford Borough Council’s delivery agent for the Home Upgrade Grant Scheme, Citizens Advice Bedford and two Heat Pump installers that will showcase the available solutions and answer your questions.

Every Friday

Weekly garden maintenance sessions at 

Green Man Garden, Addison Howard Park

All are welcome to take part in weekly volunteer- led sessions within the Green Man Community Garden in Addison Howard Park, Kempston. With lots of different garden maintenance tasks to get involved in, from planting and clearing, to woodwork. No experience necessary. Sessions take place every Friday from 12 noon-2pm.

The Green Man Community Garden is located at the back of Addison Park, near to The Grange/Pigeon Club.
Free parking is available next to the garden.

Sunday 16 June

Community herb garden maintenance session on

Rothsay/Castle Road roundabout

Help to maintain the community herb garden situated on the roundabout.

Bring hand tools and gloves if you have them, spares should be available.

Regular one hour care sessions are held here and everyone is welcome to join in between 5pm and 6pm.

Teen volunteers needed at our libraries

Summer reading challenge

Teen volunteers needed!
Bedford libraries are seeking teens aged 14-18 to help this summer with the summer reading challenge. Tasks include helping children join the challenge, talking to them about books and handing out rewards.
Volunteering is a great way to meet new people, learn new skills and gain valuable work experience and keep you busy over the long summer holidays.
