Recycling is good but can you do better and reduce what you buy or reuse what you already have?
Repairing an item can be a simple fix to keep your favourite items looking great for longer. From sewing on a lost button, to patching a hole in your jeans, Love Your Clothes have some great videos to help you repair or upcycle your favourite items.
Or why not meet The Mend Crew at The Higgins on Saturday 15 June between 11 and 4. Bring along your clothes or soft toys and learn how to mend things yourself.
If you can’t make these events, but have a wardrobe full of items you no longer wear, why not give them a new lease of life. Your old clothes could create someone else’s dream outfit so donate items to a local charity shop or use online sites such as eBay or Vinted to sell your items on. Many high street retailers such as Primark and M&S offer clothing donation banks in-store.
Home composting is an easy way to reduce the amount of waste thrown into your black lidded bin. It also has the added benefit of creating a great compost to help keep your flowers blooming all summer long.
You’ll be surprised by how much you can add to your compost bin, from veg peelings and coffee grounds to weeds and clippings from the garden, even egg boxes and clean shredded paper too! A mix of all of these is the perfect recipe for good compost.

Bedford Repair Café is run by volunteers to help you save money and the planet. Come along to fix your electricals, toys, bikes, clothes and learn a thing or two about repairing items. No booking required, just turn up and queue with one item per household fixed for free.

Great Big Green Week, the UK’s largest celebration of nature and call for action on climate change, returns this June. Bedford Borough Council is excited to announce a line-up of events on Saturday 15 June, hosted by The Higgins Bedford, Panacea Museum, and John Bunyan Museum. The programme aims to raise awareness about environmental conservation and inspire residents to take action to protect our natural world.

We will be joined by Agility Eco, Bedford Borough Council’s delivery agent for the Home Upgrade Grant Scheme, Citizens Advice Bedford, and two Heat Pump installers that will showcase the available solutions.
