Bedford Kite and Motoring Festival 2023

I hope this newsletter finds you well and that you enjoying the delightful change in weather. The sun has finally emerged from behind the clouds, bringing with it a renewed sense of joy and anticipation for the upcoming May half term and the start of Summer of SEND 2023! I am thrilled to share with you an array of brilliant SEND activities that await your children in the weeks to come and I can’t wait to be able to announce even more activities and events through our Summer of SEND – make sure you are following the Local Offer on social media to get the latest updates!

We have curated an exciting line-up of events designed specifically for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
Our aim in Bedford Borough is to provide an inclusive and enjoyable experience for all, ensuring every child has the opportunity to explore new horizons and create unforgettable memories.
It is our aim to ensure that your children feel included, supported, and above all, have a fantastic time exploring new adventures,
if there are other activities you would like to see then please do let us know and we will try to arrange whatever we can.

This edition includes information on our much-anticipated SEND sailing adventure. Imagine your child feeling the exhilarating rush of wind against their face as they navigate the waters, building confidence and developing new skills along the way. This activity promises to leave them with a sense of accomplishment and

a love for the open water. For those who prefer to stay on land, we have arranged exclusive horse riding sessions.

The rhythmic motion of horseback riding has been proven to be therapeutic and beneficial for children with a range of SEND needs. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to connect with these magnificent creatures, fostering a sense of trust and camaraderie.

Additionally, we have funded Bedford Borough Parent Carer Forum (BBPCF) who have organized a day of Aqua Park fun, where children can enjoy a splashing good time in the water, conquering thrilling slides and obstacles. This promises to be an action-packed day filled with laughter and excitement, ensuring a memorable experience for all. If your child loves the water then don’t miss the new exclusive SEND swimming sessions at Robinson Pool and Kempston Swimming pool.

I am delighted that we will have a dedicated SEND section at this year’s Kite Festival, I will be there on Saturday and Sunday and I hope to speak to as many of you as possible on the day (let’s hope for good weather!).

So, let the sun be our guiding light as we embark on another Summer of SEND filled with laughter, growth, and cherished moments.

Special Educational Needs or Disability (SEND) Health Focus Week – 9th to 16th June 2023

SEND Health Focus Week is a series of FREE
interesting and engaging workshops and webinars
by health professionals and Experts by Experience

for parents/carers and professionals in Bedfordshire

who care for or work with young people with SEND.

The week begins on the 9th of June and finishes on the 16th.

These talks will cover a range of topics from ADHD or sleep, to autism or the positives of neurodiversity.

All of the talks are free to attend and will be recorded in case you can’t make it on the day. However there will be a Q&A after the talks which won’t be recorded, so if you have any questions please try and come along!

Bedford Borough Parent Carer Forum FREE Preparing for Adulthood training for parents/carers

Tuesday 6th June – 9.30am-3pm

Bedford Borough Parent Carer Forum have arranged this day to give parent/carers the opportunity to find out more about preparing for adulthood. We have funded this so that we can offer it to you for free.

What does the law say about support in adulthood for young people with SEN and disabilities, who are approaching 18, or for those who have already reached adulthood? What rights do parents and carers have in providing, or not having to provide, support?

Any young person aged 18 or over who has additional needs, may be entitled to care and support under the CARE ACT 2014.

What does this mean for young people planning for adult life, and for carers? Or for those already over 18?

Who should be assessed, and what should that assessment look like?

What should a good care plan look like? What support should the Local Authority be offering?

How does the care plan link with Education Health and Care Plans (EHCPs)?

What are your rights as carers?

What role does health play in the assessment of care needs?

If you don’t know what your young person’s rights are, you may not know how to advocate for their best outcomes. Come and learn more with The Advocacy and Support Partnership, experts in the field of transition to adulthood. Suitable for parents with children aged 14+, but particularly important for those nearer to 18, or already in adulthood.
